Measure S goes back to the voters again in Town of Mammoth Lakes California

Mammoth Unified School District refuses to take no for an answer when it comes to its Measure S special tax proposal for educational purposes.
As you may remember, Measure S went before voters on June 5 and failed by a fraction of the amount of votes needed to pass. The measure needed a two-thirds vote to win, or 66 percent, but only received 65.39 percent yes votes.
According to Christy Robles at Mono County, the request to put Measure S on the November ballot came to her office on Aug. 8, just two days before the deadline. At the Board of Supervisors meeting on Aug. 14, Robles stated that some voters were outraged by the last minute application.
Questions have been raised as to why MUSD waited until the last minute to put this on the ballot. It seems to leave no time for debate or education before choosing another special election.
As for the decertification issues regarding voting machines (see last week’s Board of Supervisors story), the new requirements do not go into effect for six months and therefore the county can use the machines they have for the special election, according to Robles.
If passed this time around, the measure would place an annual special tax, not to exceed $59, on each parcel of taxable land in the District for four years.
